Abnormalities of hemostatic mechanism in patients with epidemic hemorrhagic fever

Abstract

|
Hemostatic mechanism was studied in patients with epidemic hemorrhagic fever within 10 days after the onset of the disease. Of the ten patients, observed coagulation time was moderately prolonged in 6 patients while it was within normal limits in four patients. In another series of experiments on eight patients with markedly prolonged coagulation time (17¢¥46"¡¾2¢¥4"), the prothrombin time was normal, whereas prothrombin consumption time was significantly decreased. From the results of thromboplastin generation test, abnormalities were found in factor
IX and in platelets. In view of the above results, it may be concluded that the coagulopathy observed in patients with epidemic hemorrhagic fever is caused by the defective generation of thromboplastin.
